Abstract

James Kottayil (1915-1967), a Ranchi Jesuit, witnesses to Jesus through his compassionate socio-pastoral ministry dedicated to the integral development of the Adivasis of Chotanagpur. Moved by a deep solidarity with the poor, he works tirelessly to liberate tribal communities from exploitation, bonded labour, and social marginalization, a commitment that ultimately leads to his martyrdom. His life reveals compassion as the heart of Christian discipleship, culminating in forgiveness, reconciliation, and a lasting legacy of justice and human dignity.
