A new review examines 18 common misunderstandings and uses seven recent volcano events to explain the hazards more clearly.
The authors group the misconceptions into six themes: seismology; volcanoes and climate; volcanic systems and structures; hazards; timescales; and photographs and footage. Each discussion includes key takeaways and summaries of recent research intended to help explain volcanic processes, hazards, impacts and risks.
The paper then presents case studies from Mount Agung in Indonesia, Mount Etna in Italy, Kīlauea in the United States, Tajogaite in Spain, La Soufrière in St. Vincent, Taal Volcano in the Philippines and Yellowstone caldera in the United States. These examples show how inaccurate information was shared and how it was countered.
The misconceptions examined
The researchers identify 18 misconceptions commonly encountered by volcanologists working with the public and media. They organize them into six themes, including misunderstandings about the “Pacific Ring of Fire,” “supervolcanoes,” “mega-tsunamis,” eruption forecasts, volcanic ash versus smoke, and magma “chambers.”
The paper also describes seven recent eruption or volcano case studies in which incorrect information was widely shared and then countered. The authors provide takeaway points and research summaries for each misconception to support clearer public explanations.
