Researchers tested polished desalinated produced water as a supplemental irrigation source for field-grown alfalfa in semi-arid West Texas, using conventional groundwater as a comparison. They assessed soil chemistry, metals, plant growth, forage quality and soil microbial communities at two growth stages.

Alfalfa growth and biomass did not differ significantly between the irrigation treatments. Forage quality was similar and sometimes better with the treated produced water, while bacterial and fungal communities remained broadly stable. The water met most irrigation standards, but strontium levels were above recommended thresholds, and longer-term monitoring is needed.
