The RedWater system is designed to drill through Martian soil and rock to reach buried water ice, then clear the resulting borehole with compressed gas. This approach avoids the heavy water-based mixtures commonly used to move drill cuttings on Earth, which could be difficult to supply and operate on Mars.
The study’s model estimates the minimum gas flow needed to transport the chips. Researchers compared it with established methods for moving solids through vertical pipes, tested it in a dedicated vacuum setup, and ran two tests with the complete RedWater system. The predictions showed reasonable agreement with the experiments.
