Researchers compared the flowering and fruiting of the Cerrado shrub Macairea radula in unburned areas and areas treated with low-intensity prescribed burns. They monitored the plants monthly for 12 months.
The burned shrubs began flowering earlier and continued flowering for longer. But they had a shorter fruiting period and produced fewer fruits, showing that more flowers did not lead to more fruit in this study.
Macairea radula in low-intensity prescribed-burned areas flowered earlier and over a longer period than plants in unburned areas. This indicates that the species is stimulated by fire but does not require fire to flower. Despite the extended flowering, fire shortened the fruiting period and reduced fruit abundance. The results suggest that effects early in reproduction prevented the increase in fruit availability that might have been expected from the greater flowering display.
Prescribed fire is used in protected areas of the Brazilian Cerrado to imitate aspects of natural fire patterns. These results show why its effects should be assessed across the full reproductive cycle, rather than judged by flowering alone. For this species, scheduling burns outside periods of high reproductive sensitivity may reduce harm to reproduction while retaining the benefits of low-intensity fire management.
