Polyamorous relationships bring familiar challenges—and some extra pressures

A survey found that people with multiple intimate partners described relationship difficulties alongside stigma, social pressure and practical complications.

Researchers analyzed anonymous, open-ended survey responses from 63 U.S. adults engaged in polyamorous relationships. The participants had an average age of 34.7; 82.5% were White, 49.2% were women and 46% were bisexual.

The analysis identified six themes: stigma and discrimination, personal “self-work,” challenges in existing relationships, difficulty making new connections, challenges involving a partner’s other partners, and logistical problems. The findings suggest that people in polyamorous relationships report many challenges also found in monogamous relationships, but that having multiple intimate partners can change the context or add further pressures.

The pressures participants described

The six themes were stigma and discrimination; the need for personal self-work; challenges in existing relationships; challenges making new connections; challenges involving “metamours,” or a partner’s other partners; and logistical challenges. Participants also described difficulties that were unique to, or made more difficult by, having multiple intimate partners. The study linked some reported pressures to anti-polyamory stigma and to internalized assumptions that monogamy is the normal or preferred relationship structure.

Why these findings matter

Recognizing these as common relationship and social pressures may help therapists work more effectively with polyamorous clients, according to the researchers. The findings may also inform treatment approaches and public education materials, while supporting efforts to address stigma and discrimination against people in consensual non-monogamous relationships.

Evidence and caveats

This was an exploratory qualitative study based on an anonymous, open-ended survey and a thematic analysis of responses from 63 people living in the United States. The sample was predominantly White, and the abstract does not establish that the themes represent all people in polyamorous relationships. Because participants reported their own experiences and the study did not compare groups directly, the findings describe reported challenges rather than their prevalence or effects relative to monogamous relationships.
