A simple comparison between a coral’s color and a white reference patch tracked key signs of bleaching in two species during a controlled heat test.
Researchers tested whether standard digital photographs could provide a lower-cost way to assess coral bleaching during controlled heat-stress experiments. They analyzed the red, green and blue color values in images of two coral species and compared them with established physiological measurements.
A simple measure of how far each coral’s color was from a photographed white reference performed nearly as well as the best color-corrected measure. It predicted symbiont density and total chlorophyll better than the PAM fluorometry measure used for comparison, while other color measures were better suited to estimating photosynthetic performance and host protein content.
What the photos captured
The researchers photographed fragments of Acropora hemprichii and Stylophora pistillata during a Coral Bleaching Automated Stress System experiment. They used a semi-automated process to extract red, green and blue values and assessed 63 color indices against PAM-derived Fv/Fm, a measure of photosynthetic performance, as well as symbiont density, chlorophyll content and host protein content.
The strongest result came from D_toWhite, which measures the color distance between each coral fragment and a white reference patch in the image. Calculated directly from uncorrected photographs, it performed nearly identically to the best color-corrected index, DeltaE76, and outperformed PAM-derived Fv/Fm when predicting symbiont density and total chlorophyll. Green-weighted color indices were better matches for Fv/Fm and host protein content, suggesting that different image signals captured different aspects of coral condition.
