Researchers tested whether standard digital photographs could provide a lower-cost way to assess coral bleaching during controlled heat-stress experiments. They analyzed the red, green and blue color values in images of two coral species and compared them with established physiological measurements.

A simple measure of how far each coral’s color was from a photographed white reference performed nearly as well as the best color-corrected measure. It predicted symbiont density and total chlorophyll better than the PAM fluorometry measure used for comparison, while other color measures were better suited to estimating photosynthetic performance and host protein content.
