Researchers propose pairing conversational AI with optimization software that can explain choices, test scenarios and enforce business rules.
The authors introduce a four-part framework built around insight, interpretability, interactivity and improvisation. In their proposal, generative AI helps create an up-to-date view of operations, explain trade-offs, support conversational what-if questions and update models when circumstances change.
The paper emphasizes that generative AI would complement rather than replace optimization. AI could lower the barriers to using and interpreting models, while optimization would enforce the goals, rules and hard constraints included in those models.
The four-part framework
The article presents the 4I framework: Insight, Interpretability, Interactivity and Improvisation. Together, these principles are intended to help frontline decision-makers use optimization through more accessible explanations, conversational scenario analysis and updates triggered by changing events. The authors also identify risks, including AI-generated errors known as hallucinations and the possibility that people may rely too heavily on AI systems.
