Researchers interviewed 16 international students and nine community members whose professional work supported international students in Australia. They examined how students experience the overlapping opportunities and pressures of living overseas.
For international students, studying abroad can bring opportunity and strain
Interviews in Australia describe overseas study as a balancing act involving education, work, social life and family expectations.

How overseas life felt
The study identified three connected patterns. First, the benefits and consequences of life overseas were intertwined: opportunities could exist alongside strain rather than replacing it. Second, students moved through social settings linked to study, work and family that could be both open and exclusive, offering belonging or limiting access. Third, family love and support could be a source of strength while also creating a burden of responsibility and expectation. The researchers describe this lived combination as a “twisted space” with “exclusive multiplicity.”
Why the tensions matter
The findings present international students’ experiences as more complex than a simple choice between opportunity and hardship. They suggest that students’ academic, social, work and family lives need to be understood together, because pressures and support in one area can be connected to experiences in another.
Evidence and caveats
The study is based on interviews with 16 international students and nine community members in Australia. It provides a detailed qualitative account of how participants described their experiences, rather than a measurement of how common these experiences are among international students more broadly. The findings are therefore tied to this study’s participants and setting and do not establish that all international students experience overseas study in the same way.
